Quote Builder
Turn what the customer already told you into a draft quotation
quote-builder.txtas is → to be
Today a quotation is copied from the last one, priced in a spreadsheet, checked and exported, and redone three times. Afterwards it is picked from parts, priced with the margin visible, and sent.Illustrative hours, not a measurement.
Most quotations start as a copy of the last one, and the margin is worked out afterwards, if at all. Quote Builder assembles the quotation from the parts you actually sell, shows the margin while you build it, and asks for approval when it falls below your floor. What the customer told you is already in it.
The quotation starts from details the customer already entered, and whoever prices it corrects a draft instead of starting from an empty page.
How it runs
- the enquiry's own details carried into the draft
- the parts that follow a rule calculated, the rest left blank
- a person reviews and sends, always
- the sent version kept, so a later change is visible
Where it does not fit
- pricing that depends on a site visit nobody has made
- work priced by negotiation rather than by inputs
- regulated pricing with a prescribed format
Size: a medium piece of work — an estimate from the pattern, not from your business.
What we would want to know before committing
- what a price actually depends on here
- which parts are fixed and which are judged every time
- who is allowed to send a quotation out
- how often a quotation is revised before it is accepted
- price three recent jobs by hand and compare against a draft
- agree what the tool may decide and what it may not
- check how often the inputs are wrong today
